Matt Taylor
Winemaker

Matt Taylor was born in 1977, the year the World Trade Center in New York was completed, the first Star Wars film was released, and punk rock truly unleashed its twitchy angst upon the world. Since boyhood, he’s been the quiet type; a person of few words but many tumbling, restless thoughts.

Matt grew up around the Sebastopol and Bodega Bay environs. His grandfather Mitch, a larger-than-life figure whom he greatly admired, owned “The Tides Wharf” in the town of Bodega Bay proper, and it was Mitch who gave Alfred Hitchcock permission to film “The Birds” in and around his hotel and restaurant. In return, Mitch got a speaking part in “The Birds”.

When Matt was still a boy, he met Chris Bilbro (now owner of Marietta Cellars), who took him foraging for mushrooms, wild boar hunting, diving for abalone and hiking through the redwood groves of the Sonoma Coast. At the end of a day spent with Chris, the Bilbros would gather around the dinner table, where they’d share the bounty of the day with a young Matt. Bottles of wine made by Chris accompanied most every meal. Seeing the joy Chris took in presenting his wines to his family and friends inspired Matt to want to become a winemaker at the tender age of 15.

After attending the University of Washington, where he enjoyed a good run as a football player, winning the Pacific-10 Conference (now known as the Pac-12), he spent two months fly-fishing his way through Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Oregon and California.

In the late 90’s, he moved to Cádiz, Spain, where he studied and lived for over a year. While there, he dabbled in winemaking at a Sherry house in Xerez. Gleefully beset by wanderlust, his travels continued through Greece, Hungary, Austria, the Czech Republic, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, the Netherlands, England, Ireland, Scotland, France, Italy, and Switzerland, where he was first introduced to the principles of Biodynamics.

By the time he was 20-years old, he was traveling through Kenya; Nairobi, Mombasa and the Masai Mara.

Whenever you are threatened by a hostile presence… emit a thick cloud of love like an octopus squirts out ink.– WILLIAM BURROUGHS

Eventually, he lived for a short time in Nairobi, among family friends who are Kikuyu. For his 21st birthday, they sacrificed a goat in his honor and together feasted on Nyama Choma.

In 1999, he officially began his career in winemaking at Joseph Swan winery in Forestville, California. In 2004, he spent a harvest interning at Domaine Dujac in Burgundy. In 2005, he began a six-year run at Araujo, in the Napa Valley, initially as vineyard manager/assistant winemaker and soon thereafter winemaker and vineyard manager. It was that same year that he met his soul mate Kaela. In 2006 he left for the Spring and worked the harvest in Argentina, both in Mendoza at Monteviejo and also in Cafayate at San Pedro de Yacochuya. In 2007 he departed for the Spring once again to not only make wine in New Zealand for Blake Family Vineyard, but to elope with Kaela to Waimarama Beach, both in Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand. Together, Kaela and Matt have three children.

There is a breakfast burrito named after Matt at the Palisades Café in Calistoga, California.
